From the 1st of July, Smoking in public places in England will be banned by law.

Smoking in all indoor public places will be banned.

All English offices, retail outlets and company vehicles no matter how big or small are required by law to:

• Provide correct no smoking signs at entrances and inside all smoke free premises (including signs for company vehicles)
• Take reasonable steps to ensure that staff and customers are aware that premises and vehicles are legally required to be smoke free
• Remove any existing indoor smoking rooms
• Ensure that no one smokes in smoke free premises or vehicles

Enforcement of this law means that fines may be given as penalty for not adhering to the regulations which include:

• £50 fine for individuals caught smoking in a banned area
• £200 on-the-spot fines for companies not displaying the correct signage in their premises (rising to £1000 if the matter goes to court)
• £2500 fine for companies who do not prevent individuals from smoking in a banned area

How many signs must I display by law?

I need a sign for my company vehicles, do I need the same sign for my entrances?

No, the law understands that vehicles can't display an A5 sign easily so instead all that is needed is one square international no smoking sign (cigarette with a red prohibited circle crossed through it). Please click here to visit our vehicle no smoking signs.

Which signs must I display in Scotland or Wales?
